the end of the movie

I really did not like the ending of the movie. I thought it was so simplistic, and I know what you are going to say, everything had meaning behind it. However, after seeing great battle scenes and so much action throughout the whole movie, it had a very gloomy and dull finish. I wanted and half expected the film to end with a great battle where Kat and Paul both die glorious deaths. Other than that I thought the movie was great and I enjoyed it very much.

  1. The only mistake in your post is when you state that you know what I'm going to say. At some point, you may find me predictable, although that is doubtful. But not after two weeks. I won't refute your statement by saying "everything ha[s] meaning meaning behind it." (Notice that I change your past tense to present tense. A work of fiction is always occurring, while a historical event happened only once). Anyway, a different ending might also have been done in such a way as to "have meaning," so that would be a specious argument for me to take.

For them to "die gloriously" would be a complete negation of the film's message and theme. How can you have two hours of a film screaming that war is a meaningless waste, and then have it end "gloriously."

I can appreciate being disappointed with the ending, but only if you've been trained through many years of watching films that always have happy endings where the hero wins out. Those are not the kind of films we will be watching.

I'm gratified to hear that you liked the film and thought it had artistic merit.
